EISENMAN, J. S. Pyrogen-induced changes in the thermosensitiuity of septal and preoptic neurons. Am. J. Physiol. 216(Z): 330-334. 19697Single-unit responses were studied in urethan-anesthetized cats. Highly thermosensitive, preoptic cells (Qro > Z), the presumed central thermodetectors, responded to bacterialpyrogen (Piromen) injection (2-3 pg/kg, iv) with a decrease in thermosensitivity, without any change in firing rate at normal core temperature (38 C). Units whose characteristics suggest that they were interneurons in the regulatory pathways showed both a change in sensitivity and in firing rate following pyrogen administration. Warm-sensitive cells decreased their sensitivities and firing rates, while cool-sensitive ones increased their firing rates. These responses are appropriate for the decrease in heat loss and increase in heat production that would be seen in an unanesthetized animal during the rising phase of a pyrogeninduced fever. Thermally insensitive (Qlol) or normally sensitive (Qr&!) units were unaffected by the pyrogen. The observed interneuron responses support the view that fever represents a shift of the thermoregulatory set point. Since the firing rate of the high Qro units was unchanged at 38 C, the neural drive for this resetting must originate from a change in the activity of some other, as yet undetermined, class of cells; perhaps from specialized thermoinsensitive neurons.

Manifest Destiny and American Identity in Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian
McCarthy scholarship has predominantly tended to stress the writer’s revisionism with regard to his rendering of the myth of the American West in Blood Meridian (1985). McCarthy’s novel has beenmainlyhailed as a critique of the violence of manifest destiny. This study aims to delineate aspects of McCarthy’s narrative which resist the predominant view of him as a revisionist. In this re...
متن کاملAmerican Decline in the Perspective of Democrats and Republicans: Otherization and Construction of American Identity in Election Speeches
American decline has received substantial attention from Iranian political and academic circles, with few analysts paying attention to the domestic debate on the concept. One of the overlooked aspects is the different ways that liberals and conservatives define and construct it. This difference is manifested in the perception of American identity and on the global role of the US, and intensifie...
متن کاملCombat Readiness Test: Design and Validation in the Iranian Military
Background and Aim: Physical fitness is a major contributor to combat readiness, and current military tests do not measure it appropriately. The purpose of this study was to design a combat readiness test that could reliably and consistently determine the level of physical fitness distinctly required prior to deployment into the battlefield. Methods: The subjects of this study were military per...
متن کاملAssertiveness, Compliance, and Politeness: Pragmatic and Sociocultural Aspects of ‘Brazilian English’ and 'American English'
This paper showed the results of a qualitative investigation that looked into intracultural communication between Brazilian teachers and students of English, and intercultural communication between American teachers and Brazilian students of English. The aims were to identify and describe contextualization cues used by both Brazilian and American speakers of English, and to connect these cues w...
